Build Guide

From Bump In The Night
Jump to: navigation, search
Player characters on BITN may have permanent builds placed on the grid. These must be requested and inspected by staff. The following guidelines apply:

  • Player Characters get 3 rooms base to use for builds.
  • Each Separate Safe Place Merit grants an additional room.
  • Characters in a Posse may pool their room totals
  • A dead or frozen character's build is eligible for IC or OOC repossession. When possible, the player who created will be consulted

The actual IC size of all player builds will be limited to the logical size of the area chosen, and limited by whatever social merits (Resurces, Allies, Status, etc) a character possesses. Any build which violates theme or setting, such as massive skyscrapers, ancient castles or 30,000 seat stadiums are likely to be denied.

Requesting a Build

Build requests are submitted through the game itself, through the req/job system.

If a player has any reason to believe their build might need special consideration, rulings, staff attention, etc, they should create a request with the build overview first. This will allow staff to review and approve (or deny) the request before the player spends time writing up descriptions for the rooms.

Players should format their requests like this:

req Build: <Build Name>=

Intro: Hi, how are you? I'd like a build, please.

Build Overview: Start with a brief (like 1-2 sentences) description of what you want. It should include if it's a home, business, etc. Then include how many rooms you need, and how they're linked. We'd also appreciate a sentence or so about the who/what/how/why. "Bob decided he wanted to own his own bar and has the resources to buy it" is plenty.
Build Location: Where is the build located? What grid room does it attach to? Please save us some time and go to the grid square/room itself and type "think %L" to have the game display the dbref number for the location of this new build.
Build Name: This is what players will see when they are in the town. It should be the name of your house, business, etc. If you wish to use a specific alias (or short code) to access your building, include that. If you do not, we will make something up. Bob's Bar and Grill will likely have the alias "BBG".
Build Description: This is what players will see "from the street". It should include a description of the physical building/location, as well as an idea of what the purpose of this building is. "A two story brick building, with a sign that reads 'Bob's Bar and Grill'," is perfect. "A road that leads up the hill" is not.
Room Name: This is the actual name of the room you are located in. This can be appended with the build name at the end, ie, "Living Room - Bob's House".
Room Description: This is the description for the main room, whatever it is. As we are limiting a build to two rooms, this can be as broad or as narrow as you need it to be. For the sake of readability, please keep this below 2-3 paragraphs. (Players can use views for additional details. These will be added after the build is on-grid.)
2nd Room Name: The name of your second room, if applicable.
2nd Room Outside Desc: The description of the exit that takes you out of the first room and into the second room. If your second room is "upstairs bedroom", this likely describes the stairs that leads up.
2nd Room Description: The name of your second room, if applicable.
3rd Room Name: The name of your second room, if applicable.
3rd Room Outside Desc: The description of the exit that takes you into the third room.
3rd Room Description: The name of your second room, if applicable.

Misc: Your above descriptions should be able to define how your room is connected together. From the main floor (room 1) you can go up (room 2) or down (room 3). If there's something more complex, or something else that wasn't included, please include that here.

Directory Listing: Do you want your build listed on "dir/all"? Let us know! Also, let us know the "availability" of your establishment, if applicable. Availability is the resources (or other means) required to make use of your establishment. Please note that any build added to the directory is intended to be public. If you don't want people showing up to RP, do not have your build listed on the directory.

Requests are expected to be grammatically sound and free of typos. Please run spell check on your builds before you submit them. We do not require beautiful prose, but we will reject jobs that have not been spellchecked.

Builds must fit the world. Please see the above Build Policy.

Example

Intro: Hi build staff! Please help me out with this build.

Build Overview: Bob's Bar and Grill is nice, working-class bar, that slings burgers and fries on the side. I'd like a main room and a back room. Bob decided to buy a bar, because there isn't one in Leonardtown!
Build Location: Leonardtown - SM1 (dbref: #376)
Build Name: Bob's Bar and Grill - BBG
Build Description: Bob's Bar and Grill is a new brick building just down the street from the wharf.
Room Name: Bob's Bar and Grill
Room Description: This is the description for the main room, whatever it is. As we are limiting a build to two rooms, this can be as broad or as narrow as you need it to be. For the sake of readability, please keep this below 2-3 paragraphs. (Players can use views for additional details. These will be added after the build is on-grid.)
2nd Room Name: Back Room - Bob's Bar and Grill
2nd Room Outside Desc: In the back of the bar, there's a door marked "Private".
2nd Room Description: <Long form desc of the main room of Bob's Bar and Grill>

Misc: N/A

Directory Listing: Yes please! Bob's Bar and Grill is an availability 1 establishment.

Tending your Build

Once a build as been approved, it will be added to the grid and transferred to you. After that, you are free to add whatever additional details you would like. Drops, succs, locks, etc, are not required, but you can feel free to add them as you'd like. If a build is not clearly private, and locked, please set @fail and @ofail so players have an idea why they cannot go in.

After your build is on grid, we expect it to continue to be whatever it was that was requested. Your room descriptions can change. You can remake your bedroom into a basement. But if it's a townhouse, it should remain a townhouse. If it's a bar, it should stay a bar. If you wish to get rid of your build and start something new, just put in a job. Keep in mind, however, we'll expect some degree of in-character reasoning, continuity, etc.

Build Commands

Below you will find a few useful commands to tending to your build. Please note that this is NOT an exhaustive list, and instead meant to give players the basics. If you want a more advanced understanding of building, please go here: http://mushcode.com/Category/Building

Change the alias

From the main grid square, you'll see the exit that leads to your build. In the above example, it will be "Bob's Bar And Grill <BBG>". If you want to change "BBG" to something else, you would use the @name command. Do not set your alias to the same as another alias in the room. Also do not use any directions (ie, N S E W, NE SE SW, etc)

@name <Build Name>=<Build Name>;<New Alias>

Example:

@name Bob's Bar And Grill=Bob's Bar And Grill;BAR

Change the room desc

Let's say Bob's Bar and Grill gets some new flat screen TVs and you want to change the main room description. You'll use @desc. Please note that @desc replaces the existing description. You must make sure to use the proper line break and tab in your build. Your build description should start with "%r%t". Between paragraphs, you should have "%r%r%t".

@desc here=%r%tParagraph one long form.%r%r%tParagraph two long form.

Make it your home

Once you have your own build, it might be a better place to idle than the OOC room or quiet room. Likewise, you might just like standing around there to wait for some RP. In addition to this, our idle code sweeps idle bits to the quiet room, unless they have a home set. You need to link yourself to it. Once set, you can type "home" and the game will teleport you home.

@link me=here

If you own a build you share and want other people to be able to link to it, you'll need to set it as "abode".

@set here=Abode

You should see: Home of <your name> changed from <whatever> to <your new build>.

Setting additional details

If you need more details to describe the room, such as a particularly fancy piece of artwork, or a balcony, please use the "view" command. For information on how to use that, type "+help view"
